Start with the deadline

Read the entire notice and identify the response date, tax period, form, and amount involved. Do not assume every IRS letter is a bill, but do not ignore it. Some rights and response options depend on acting within the stated timeframe.

Preserve the complete record

Keep the envelope, every page of the notice, the related return, payment records, and correspondence. Create a timeline of what was filed, paid, received, or previously discussed.

  • Do not send original documents unless specifically required
  • Do not include sensitive records in a general website form
  • Avoid making unsupported statements before reviewing the facts
  • Document calls, dates, names, and reference numbers

Get the right professional review

An Enrolled Agent is federally authorized to represent eligible taxpayers before the IRS. Representation begins only after the facts, deadlines, records, and scope have been evaluated and a professional engagement has been accepted.
